Music and Mahj is a four round - full day tournament located in beautiful Muscle Shoals, AL. Each round (two in the morning, two in the afternoon) comprises of four games which players will have 65 minutes to complete. After the first and third round there will be a 10 minute break for refreshments. Lunch is after round 2 and will feature local music. The cash bar will open at that time and will remain open through the end of the day. Following round 4 we will have awards, local music and door prizes until 5:00. Frequently Asked Questions:
1) This is my first tournament. How should I prepare? Play! Practice building hands and learn your card. Watch videos online (we will link some great ones on our Instagram and Facebook pages). Play online with bots, play with people you don’t know, just play!!! While you are playing, have fun, it’s what MahJongg is all about.
It is important to be able to play four games (one full round) within an hour. Music and Mahj will allow 65 minute per round but if you have practiced slightly faster then you will be more comfortable during the tournament.

2) How much time do we have to play? Music and Mahj is a full day, four round tournament. A round consists of four games. There will be a 2 minute timer to familiarize each player with the tiles at the beginning of each round for the wall to be built for the first game. Players will have 65 minutes to complete each round. Any game that is not completed at the end of the allotted time for that round will result in a score of -0- for all players.
There will be a 10 minute break between the two morning rounds and the two afternoon rounds to stretch your legs, grab a snack and chat with friends. This break will be outside the gaming area.
3) Are the rules different in a tournament than regular play? Bird and Blossom uses the rules published by the National MahJongg League (NMJL) published in MahJongg Made Easy (2024). 3) What is the music portion of the tournament? The Shoals is made up of some of the most talented musicians in the business. We will be showcasing some talented musicians during lunch and the social hour after tournament play. Stay tuned for more information on this. 4) I have dietary restrictions. What will we have to eat? We do our best to accommodate all our participants dietary needs. In the registration page there is a section to spell out any dietary or other restrictions you have so that we can plan accordingly.
